History

The Built Green® Program is a national program that began with an idea that there's a way to build safe, quality homes and preserve the environment at the same time.  Built Green® utilizes a market-based approach that encourages and promotes the use of efficient development and provides new home and remodeling project buyers with homes that are more energy efficient, provide improved indoor air quality and health benefits and promotes sustainable construction practices. Built Green® provides additional choices in housing, provides environmental and economic benefits to both the consumer and community, and encourages job creation in recycling, energy efficient products and materials.

Built Green® launched in Washington State in 1997 by local home builders associations who developed their own programs, and in 2007, the program was introduced to the Eastern Washington region through Inland Northwest Built Green®, a program of the Spokane Home Builders Association.  Built Green® Washington was later formed to assist with local program efforts of the now eleven local home builders associations in the state.
